Night Cutting

Sometimes circumstances give you an opportunity to see things in a different light.  Sometimes seeing it in a different light means literally in the low light of night. We do not typically cut at night but a late order gave us the opportunity to cut in the cool of an evening. After a usually warm Spring day, the air was warm but starting to cool, the light was dimming but still not dark.  A magical time when you know that Summer is on its way and the day is just a speck longer than the day before.  The ranunculus that we needed to cut were mostly oranges for a special event with other colors added in for the designer's whims.  The flowers seemed to just glow in the twilight especially the yellows and picotees.

The blooms seemed soft, slightly muted in the coloring of old master paintings from the renaissance era.  They all seemed perfect and begging to be chosen.  It was a joy and pleasure to cut them that evening.  I tried to photograph them also, to try an capture the moment, the glow, the specialness of the evening.  I had little expectation of decent photos as I don't have a fancy camera but I was pleasantly surprised.

We probably won't have an opportunity to enjoy cutting our flowers in the evening as we move towards Summer as we will be cutting mostly in the cool of the morning.  We will be tired and just trying to get the job done but these photos will remind us how wonderful and magical one Spring night was.  We saw our flowers in a different light.

When it is dark enough,
you can see the stars.

  3. Holy smokes! Those are the most abundant photos of rananculus I have ever seen. If I was a grower only 1/2 that amazing, I would think I was very cool. This will be my new standard.
